NYU Physics Department public network printers

These are the postscript printers available in NYU physics department:

Location Printer_Name Hardware Features Speed (ppm) Default
613A Meyer nyu_physics_hp8100 HP8100 B&W Laser 32 duplex
424 Meyer nyu_physics_qms HP8100 B&W Laser 32 single sided
424 Meyer nyu_physics_ph740 Tektronix phaser740 Color Laser   single sided
424 Meyer nyu_physics_hp4m HP4m B&W Laser 8 single sided
424 Meyer nyu_physics_hp1200c HP1200c ColorInk Jet 7 (BW) 2 (C) single sided
333 Meyer nyu_physics_hp4si HP4si B&W Laser 17 duplex

Note:

  • nyu_physics_ph740 is only accessible through physics server. You can not send job to it from scires, scivis, is, is2, ..., is9, etc. You can send job to it from physics department PC, Mac and Linterm machines.

  • On SCIRES and most of the physics Linux machines, the ``nyu_'' in the printer name can be dropped off, so ``nyu_physics_hp8100'' becomes ``physics_hp8100'' .

  • Up to now, there is no way to change the default setting.

  • The UNIX/Liunx command to check printer status is

    lpq -Pprinter_name

(notice there is no space between the capital P and printer_name)

  • To print files,

    lpr -Pprinter_name     files

  • To cancel job,

    lprm -Pprinter_name     job_code

the job_code is in the status list.

  • A lot of applications on Unix/Linux machine use lpr program to print documents, here is a screen shot of printing with netscape.

  • There is also a graphic printing program called glp on scires and linterm. To launch it, you need X window support, the command you need to type is just glp.

screen shots of glp on scires

screen shots of glp on linterms

  • To use printer on Mac or PC, just select the printer name on your printer list before you print. You need to log in to Physics Department network to access these network printers.

If you use some printer frequently, you can set it as your default printer or set an alias for the print command.
